5 Dangerous Fad Diets to Avoid

Fad diets are often diets that forbid you from eating one food group (like bread), or one kind of nutrient (such as fat). They  might give you excellent results at first. The reason isn't particularly mysterious: when you restrict calories of ANY kind, whether they are calories from hamburgers or hamburger buns - you'll lose weight. However, they will fail in the end because it is virtually impossible to avoid one food group or nutrient forever! Our bodies are programed to to desire and expect a variety of foods. Chances are very good that after a few months or no bread, you'll be dreaming of rolls, cereal and pasta - and off the "diet" you will go.

5 Dangerous Fad Diets:

Diet Pills: There are hundreds of diet pills available. Some are prescription and many more over the counter. There is no denying that some will work to supress your hunger, but many, many of them will also:
Increase blood pressure
Upset the stomach
Lead to heartbeat irregularities
Cause lung damage
Cause liver damage

Drastic calorie cutting(Starvation diets): Extremely low calorie diets should NEVER be undertaken. Our bodies need a certain number of calories every day to meet our basic energy needs. These types of diets are doubly dangerous in that when we go off them (and we will), your bodies metabolism has slowed down to such a drastic degree in order to "save" energy that you will gain all the weight back plus some! This is because it takes much longer to oull your body out of this Starvation Mode than it does to put it there.

Laxatives: Laxatives are not an effective or healthy weight loss method. Calories are absorbed into your body long before the process where laxatives take effect. All you are doing is robbing your body of essentail fluids and causing dehydration.

Rapid Weight Loss: Be suspicious of any diet that promises to help you lose more than two pounds a week. Rapid weight loss may feel satisfying at first (at least emotionally), but it's almost always short-lived or indicative of a larger health problem.

Skipping Meals: Skipping meals will not help you lose weight - nor will fasting. As with all starvation diets your body will go into starvation mode and drastically reduce your bodies metabolism. When you do eat on these types of diets, your body actually stores many of the calories you need for later use. It thinks you're starving and is trying to save some calories "for later".

Remember the best diet plan is one whereby you lose 1-2 pound a week on average. This ensures that your body is adjusting to a new level of caloric intake and gives it time to adjust.
